2 teens in Davisboro accused of starting fire to get rid of contraband

Sheriff Joel Cochran says it was discovered that the fire was set to destroy contraband intended to be smuggled into Washington State Prison.

DAVISBORO, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two teenagers were taken into custody in Washington County on Thursday and are accused of starting a forest fire.

According to a Facebook post by Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran, deputies responded to a suspicious persons call on Sparta Davisboro Road just outside of Davisboro on February 29.

He says when deputies arrived on scene, they found a vehicle with a juvenile female in the driver’s seat and two males entering the woods, but they were quickly arrested. Deputies also discovered a forest fire at the scene. Firefighters and Georgia Forestry responded to put out the fire.

Sheriff Cochran says it was discovered that the fire was set to destroy contraband intended to be smuggled into Washington State Prison.

18-year-olds Travis Smith and Bryant Thaxton, are charged with criminal attempt of trading with inmates (felony), criminal trespass (misdemeanor) and burning of woodlands or other lands (felony).

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says this case is still under investigation, and more charges are possible.
