Local church provides bikes to four students with perfect attendance

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Perfect attendance for a month paid off for a few lucky students at MLK Elementary School in east Macon.

A total of 200 students attended school every day for the month of September, however four kids won bicycles following a drawing at the school Tuesday morning.

The bicycles were donated by Pastor Jarvis Adside and the congregation at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church.

“We have to begin as a community to celebrate the very small and insignificant things that we deem as insignificant but its those things that go a long with a child,” says Adside.

He joined school leaders, including Assistant Principal, Tyiesha Wright, to present the bikes to the students. Pastor Adside attended MLK and says this was a chance to show students that the community is on their side.

“To be able to see the smile on kids faces today, see how excited that they are, and my goal is to see kids exceed and the only way they are going to do that they have to be in the classroom,” says Adside.

It’s also an opportunity for him to show how church and school can work together make sure students are successful.

“To help people create a better life but to also to promote and have a better character as well. ”

Wright says this is a result of the hard work teachers put in every day.

“We understand the correlation between attendance and student performance, and growth. So we want to encourage our kids to come to school. We want to make MLK a place where kids want to be.

Tuesday’s recognition was part of Attendance Awareness Month with the Bibb County School District.
