17-year-old charged with murder in Laurens County

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two people have been arrested in connection with a murder in Laurens County, after a body was discovered Sunday morning.

According to a Laurens County Sheriff’s news release, 66-year-old Curtis Ray Beck was found dead by co-workers in his home on Turkey Creek Church Road after he failed to show up for a scheduled job.

17-year-old Dustin Sage Mitchell, along with a 15-year-old female, were apprehended just after midnight on Monday by Laurens County Deputies as they were driving down a rural road in southern Laurens County. Deputies from Wheeler County, the Georgia State Patrol, as well as the Department of Natural Resources assisted in the arrest. The victim’s car was recovered at the scene.

It is believed the two teens, who had reportedly run away from home, broke into Beck’s then vacant house in order to commit a burglary. The victim returned to the house sometime later, and was violently attacked when he encountered the intruders.

Mitchell and the juvenile have both been charged with Murder, Robbery, Burglary, and Theft by Taking (motor vehicle). Mitchell was taken to the Laurens County Law Enforcement Center, while the female is in the custody of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation as well as the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office of Criminal Investigations Division at 478-272-1522.
