Woman dies in accidental fire

IDEAL, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A house fire destroyed a home and killed a woman in Macon County Monday afternoon.

The incident happened at 990 Rueben Odom Road around 5:45 p.m., 73-year-old Mertis Virginia Jones died during the blaze.

“Investigators with my office have determined that the cause of the fire was the result of unattended cooking,” says Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.

Ideal Fire Department and the Macon County Fire Department assisted Hudgens’ Fire Investigation Unit in battling the fire.

Since the beginning of 2015 seven Georgians have lost their lives due to fires.
