Winter begins this weekend

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The shortest day of the year is Sunday which signifies the start of winter, however conditions will not feel very winter like.

This Evening

Things warmed up throughout this past week leading up to the cold front last night, but now that it has passed conditions will get cold again for a short period of time. Overnight lows will drop below freezing for most of Middle Georgia with a few locations likely to drop below 30. Wind will remain out of the northwest overnight but back off from the afternoon intensity with gusts to around 15 mph and sustained 5-10 mph. Skies will remain clear.

The first half of the weekend will be rather nice with temperatures climbing into the low to mid 60s, or a few degrees above average for this time of year. The wind will shift from the northeast to the southeast throughout the day at around 5 mph. Overhead skies will stay clear.

Overnight will also be clear and cold however most locations will stay above freezing. The coldest spots may hit freezing, however. The wind will be light from the south-southwest around 5 mph.

Sunday and Beyond

Sunday is the shortest day of the year (also known as the Winter Solstice) and the start of the coldest season. However temperatures will be rather warm as highs push towards 70 degrees. The warmest locations may get there. Wind will be light from the northeast-northwest throughout the day, becoming northeasterly overnight.

Monday will see a drop in temperatures as highs reach to around 60 degrees, however in the day to follow highs will climb towards and eventually reach the 70s. That warmth will carry into Christmas.
