MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A Bibb County man has been convicted of cruelty to children after prosecutors say he beat a 1-year-old child with a belt while caring for the child and her siblings.

The Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office says a Bibb County jury convicted 35-year-old Willie Clyde Brown Jr. on May 12 of cruelty to children in the second degree.

According to the DA’s office, Brown had been entrusted to care for the child and her siblings while their mother worked.

Prosecutors say daycare staff discovered a bruise on the toddler’s inner thigh and contacted the Department of Family and Children’s Services and law enforcement.

The DA’s office says Brown admitted the abuse in text messages and again on the witness stand, but prosecutors say he tried to minimize the severity of his actions.

The jury rejected Brown’s account, according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors asked the court to sentence Brown to 10 years to serve. The court sentenced Brown to 10 years, with credit for time served, according to the DA’s office.
