Westside High’s Tamdra Lawrence signs with Murray State University

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Westside high school student has made history.

Track and field athlete Tamdra Lawrence has signed a four-year scholarship with Murray State University, which is located in Kentucky.

She is the first Girls’ Region Champion in the 100 and 200-meter dashes in the school’s history, according to head track and field coach James Hickenbotham.

The USA Track and Field All-American says Lawrence has learned to motivate herself during her track meets.

“I don’t run just to beat the person in the next lane,” says the 17-year-old. “I run to beat my time and get a better time.”

Lawrence is a five-time track & field state qualifier.  Coach Hickenbotham says he noticed Lawrence’s talent when she was in middle school.

“As a coach you can put together the greatest plan ever known to man, but the athlete still has to go forth and do the work,” says Hickenbotham. “She put in the work, the time and effort to get to this day.”

Lawrence started running track in the seventh grade with coach Hickenbotham at Weaver Middle school.  The two have been winning track meets ever since.
