West Laurens still looking for first winning season under head coach Stacy Nobles
“We played well last year to be a three-win team,” Coach Nobles said concerning his team’s previous record, “looking back on it now, we lost some really close games.”
The Raiders managed to score just over 20 points a game last year, and will benefit from having a total of seven starters back, including senior quarterback Garrel Quainton. Coach Nobles believes Quainton is the right kind of player for any team to have, “He’s a great leader, he’s the kind of kid you know you want your son to be… he’s a quiet, confident leader.”
On the defensive side, the Raiders allowed just shy of 24 points per game, but will only have three returning starters from 2013. Even though his defense may be relatively young, Coach Nobles knows he’ll have to rely on a few players regardless, “Kam Jackson is a really solid football player, he’s done a great job… Matthew Turner, another senior, he’s going to anchor [the defense] in the middle, those are our two guys that played every game for us last year.”
With a tough schedule in Region 2-AAAA, Coach Nobles knows his team will have to bring all its got to get off to a good start, “I’m not looking for cupcake wins, I’m trying to get those young guys thrown into the fire off the bat.”
That fire for the Raiders starts on August 22nd, against the Thomasville Bulldogs.
