Robert Edwards no longer head football coach at Washington County High
District officials say the goal is to name a new head coach by February.

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Washington County School District announced Friday that Robert Edwards will no longer serve as head football coach at Washington County High School, effective immediately.
In a district statement, Superintendent Timothy May said Edwards will no longer serve in the role but did not provide a reason for the decision.
The statement thanked Edwards for his service and mentioned that he is a Washington County High School alumnus, a former high school and collegiate All-American and a former first-round NFL draft pick who returned to his hometown to lead the program.
“Over the past four seasons, Coach Edwards has invested hours into mentoring our students and representing our school with passion and WACO pride,” the statement said.
The district said the well-being and development of student-athletes will remain a top priority as it begins the search for a new head football coach. The district’s goal is to name a replacement by February to ensure stability and continuity for the program.
The district wished Edwards continued success in his future endeavors.
Edwards took over in 2022, replacing Joel Ingram. In his four seasons, Edwards went 20-24, including a 19-13 mark in region play. His teams qualified for the playoffs in each of his four seasons but fell in the first round each season.
The 2025 Golden Hawks were 5-6. They fell 40-7 to Dublin in the opening round of the playoffs.
