UPDATE: GBI says 21-year-old Warner Robins man charged in shooting of officer and woman

UPDATE (8 p.m.): The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it has arrested and charged 21-year-old Rashawn Williams of Warner Robins with aggravated assault on a peace officer and aggravated assault.

In a news release Thursday night, the GBI said the original 911 call came in just after 8:30 a.m., and Williams was taken into custody just after 11 a.m. According to the GBI, Williams was booked into the Houston County Jail after being taken into custody.

The GBI said Williams lived at the Rose Street home involved in the shooting and that the case will be turned over to the Houston County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.

UPDATE (7 p.m.): Warner Robins Police Chief Wayne Fisher said the officer was shot minutes after arriving on scene for a domestic call. According to Fisher, officers could hear an altercation during the 911 call, and the officer arrived at the home around 8:35 a.m. Dispatch received an “officer down” call at 8:39 a.m.

“The Warner Robins Police Department and the Houston County Sheriff’s Office responded in a unified manner as well as members from the Perry Police Department,” Fisher said. “We arrived on scene at 8:39 a.m. and seen the gravity of the situation, and we implemented immediate SWAT activation, because to our knowledge the offender had barricaded himself into the residence.”

Fisher said officers secured the area and found both the officer and the 31-year-old female caller suffering from gunshot wounds. He said Emory Hospital crews assisted at the scene, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and SWAT teams were requested around 9:07 a.m.

“Through the SWAT tactics … the person of interest did surrender to law enforcement shortly after,” Fisher said. “Again at 11:09 a.m. he was taken into custody.”

Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton also addressed the shooting.

“I pledge to you, we are not going to let evil take over Houston County,” he said. “What happened today, the bad guys are pure evil, and the good guys are some of the best in the country. And as a citizen of Houston County, as a father of two children in Houston County, I’m thankful for the law enforcement officers that we have here.”

UPDATE (4:40 p.m.): Warner Robins police are providing new details about the shooting Thursday.

According to a new release from the department, officers responded to a domestic call in the 100 block of Rose Street. Police say the suspect fired at both a female victim and a responding officer as the officer approached the home.

Police said the suspect later surrendered without further incident after the scene was contained by multiple agencies and SWAT teams.

Police say the GBI will provide further updates as it leads the investigation. As of this update, the GBI has not commented.

UPDATE: A Warner Robins police officer and a woman are in critical condition after a shooting police say was an ambush during a response call.

At a news conference this afternoon, Warner Robins Police Chief Wayne Fisher identified 21-year-old Rashawn Williams as the offender in the investigation. Fisher said Williams ambushed an officer who was responding to a call just after 8:30 a.m.

Victims hospitalized in critical condition

Chief Fisher says a 31-year-old woman was also shot. Her relationship to Williams remains part of the investigation.

The officer and the woman are both being treated at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon and are listed in critical condition. The injured officer is a 35-year-old patrol officer who has been with the Warner Robins Police Department for eight years.

Fisher said Williams was not injured and asked the public to keep the officer and the woman in their prayers.

Scene secured after barricaded suspect incident

Earlier in the day, the Warner Robins Police Department advised residents to avoid the area of Redmond Street as officers responded to a barricaded suspect.

Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton confirmed that a Warner Robins police officer had been shot. Police said the scene was secured and there was no immediate threat to the public.

Suspect in custody, investigation continues

At approximately 11:20 a.m., Sheriff Moulton said a suspect was in custody and that the officer was in stable condition at that time.

At 10:40 a.m., 41NBC reporter Bre’Anna Sheffield spoke with Moulton, who said authorities had identified the suspect but were not yet releasing details. He also said the officer was being taken to a local hospital. Sheffield was on scene as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrived.

The GBI is now leading the investigation.

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Warner Robins Police Department is advising residents to avoid the area of Redmond Street this morning as officers respond to a barricaded suspect.

According to Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton, a Warner Robins Police officer was shot.

Police confirmed they are currently working an active scene involving a suspect who has barricaded themselves. While the investigation remains ongoing, officials said the scene has been secured.
