MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A section of Walls Road near Northeast High School is closed while crews make emergency stormwater repairs after inspectors found far more damage than initially expected.

According to a news release from MWA, the problem began with the failure of a brick headwall connected to an aging box culvert. Crews originally believed the repairs could be made without affecting traffic, but once the site was cleared, inspectors found substantial erosion at the culvert’s outfall. According to the release, the creek bed under the structure had been undermined by about five feet, which created a safety issue that required a full road closure.

The box culvert is estimated to be nearly 100 years old.

Because Walls Road is heavily used by school buses and neighborhood traffic, MWA’s Stormwater Division brought in a contractor immediately. The contractor coordinated with the Macon-Bibb County Traffic Engineer before the closure.

MWA says the emergency repair project includes removing the collapsed brick headwall extension, building a new reinforced concrete foundation for the culvert and wingwalls, rebuilding wingwall extensions supporting two stormwater pipes tied to the roadway inlets and stabilizing the creek bed to prevent future erosion.

MWA said crews have already started work, and the project is expected to be finished by Friday, December 5.
