Waitr and local businesses partner to help feed families for Thanksgiving

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – ‘Tis the season for giving! A food delivery app and a local restaurant want to make sure less fortunate families don’t go without a Thanksgiving plate.

“I think the biggest thing with Waitr giving back is we’re local. I live here, all of our drivers and management team [are] all local, so to give back to a community that’s given so much to us, that’s very meaningful for us,” Waitr City Manager Jaimie Best said.

The food delivery app is feeding 200 families in Macon.

“Our app, where our customers could also donate when they placed an order and then we also worked with local out-reach programs here in the community to locate the families,” Best said.

In just five weeks, Waitr raised almost $1,500 to help pay for Memaw’s Restaurant to provide the meals.

“They’re preparing all the food and helping us package it to get these meals out and then we, Waitr, took the donations as well as a portion that Waitr matched to pay for these meals,” she said.

Memaw’s Restaurant served 1,000 families already in the past two weeks, to continue to honor the late Memaw.

“That was part of Memaw’s legacy, to bring comfort through food to the community and so Waitr helps us achieve that goal,” Memaw’s son, Richard Lockett said.

As the anniversary of her passing nears, giving back helps the family cope.

“It really does help us to help dealing with the loss, so this helps us really being able to help others as she would have wanted us to help,” he said.

The Waitr drivers serving the Thanksgiving plates tonight are all volunteering their time.
