Volunteer Macon pitches house party ordinance to commissioners

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Volunteer Macon wants to help reduce underage drinking at house parties

The Social Host Ordinance would make it illegal for property owners to let anyone who is underage drink alcohol on their property, even if they’re not there. Violators would have to pay fines up to $500.

Volunteer Macon Officials say Bibb County schools have a higher percentage of underage drinking compared to the rest of the state and this ordinance will help lower that statistic.

“We work with the liquor stores and the sheriff’s office. The funds for that ultimately run out at some point and when they do, the changes that we’ve made at the population level, any reductions in underage drinking, they start to fade away,” explained Michael Yanosy from Volunteer Macon.

Volunteer Macon only presented the information to the county. A commissioner would need to sponsor it as an ordinance for it to be discussed in committee.
