Visitors Center at Fort Hawkins opens

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Fort Hawkins Visitors Center opened Friday. The building is designed to teach the story of Fort Hawkins and how it factors into American history.

Students from nearby schools attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

Mayor Reichert said it’s a great opportunity for them to receive a first hand experience into Macon’s history.

The SPLOST Chairman, Jeffery Monroe, believes this investment wasn’t just about the past.

“It’s a showplace for the beginning of our community and also points toward the future and that’s why it was worthy of our SPLOST dollars,” said Monroe.

Monroe noted that the project came in about $250,000 under budget. That money will be reallocated to other ongoing SPLOST projects.
