UPDATE: State puts Macon Charter Academy on probation

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Education put Macon Charter Academy on probation.

State officials said it is because the Bibb County Board of Education found a number of violations at the school during a visit last Friday. Four of the areas of improvement are reasons for the school’s charter to be terminated:

  • MCA’s failure to adhere to material terms of its charter
  • MCA’s failure to meet generally accepted standards for fiscal management
  • MCA’s violation of applicable federal, state, and local rules, regulations and statutes
  • The existence of competent substantial evidence that the continued operation of MCA would be contrary to the best interests of the students or the community

MCA has to come up with a sound corrective action plan by October 7 and implement it by November 6 or the state and Bibb County School District will move to terminate the school’s charter contract.

41NBC reached out to MCA officials for comment, but our calls were not returned.

Macon Charter Academy is facing possible probation after concerns led to a site visit by the Bibb County School District.

According a letter sent to the school, the district met with one of the founders of the school, the principal, parents, and employees.

After gathering their findings the district recommended that the Georgia Department of Education place the Macon Charter Academy on probation and create a corrective action plan with in 3 days.

Areas of concerns include leadership, teaching & learning, fiscal management, human resources, and operations.
