JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A manhunt in Twiggs County led to a school lockdown Tuesday after a man fled on foot during a traffic stop on Interstate 16, according to the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 12:30 p.m., deputies attempted a traffic stop on I-16. A man with dreadlocks, who was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans, ran from the vehicle toward the back of Academy Sports and in the direction of Hamlin Floyd Road, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office urged anyone who sees the man to call 911 immediately.
Twiggs Academy announced in a social media post just after 1 p.m. that it was under lockdown “with heavy patrol in the area due to someone fleeing a traffic stop on the interstate nearby.” The school said lockdown procedures included keeping all doors closed and locked and canceling recess.
Just after 2:30,, the school posted that student pickup would only take place at the front entrance, “which is patrolled.”
As of 4 p.m., the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office has not provided additional updates.
