UPDATE: Jacksonville police chief and wife arrested for theft

JACKSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Wheeler County Sheriff Maurice Johnson said Ashley Briley is no longer employed at the sheriff’s office following her arrest Wednesday.

41NBC is trying to figure out Charles Briley’s employment status, but calls to the police department were unanswered. Charles is the Jacksonville Police Chief. The Briley’s were arrested Wednesday for stealing a newspaper collection box and using it as a well cover at their home.

The Jacksonville Police Chief and his wife are accused of stealing a newspaper collection box and keeping it at their house to use as a well cover.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Charles and Ashley Briley were arrested in Telfair County Wednesday. Ashley Briley is also a certified Georgia police officer. 

The couple is accused of stealing the newspaper collection box sometime between June 1, 2015 and August 31, 2015. A community service organization owned the box. GBI investigators said the Briley’s lied to a GBI agent during the investigation. 

The Briley’s are each charged with one count of theft by taking, one felony county of false statements and writings and one felony count of violation of oath by a public officer. The Oconee Judicial Circuit District Attorney requested the investigation.
