UPDATE: Family reacts to Macon teen’s death, Bibb sheriff’s deputies rule shooting accidental
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb sheriff’s deputies are trying to figure out how and why a 16-year-old Macon teen was shot and killed Tuesday morning.
Authorities say it happened around 4:30 a.m.
“He was just an angel. That’s all I can say is that he was just an angel,” Charles Lester, the victim’s uncle, said.
Lester’s nephew, 16-year-old Antrez Felder, was fatally shot and they had spoken just minutes before.
“He was excited about going. He had woke me up this morning, early, to make sure he had a ride to school,” Lester said.
Bibb sheriff’s deputies responded to the call and found Antrez with a gunshot wound to the head in the bedroom of his house on Bobby Jones Lane.
Antrez’s grandfather, Sammy Felder, says he isn’t sure where a gun came from, but says Antrez was a good kid.
“He was a good kid, he was always a good kid. He was respectful and he always said yes sir and no ma’am,” Sammy Felder said.
Family and friends trickled into the home all morning, hugging and consoling one another.
Antrez’s mother, Bernice, was left speechless and still in shock.
“He just had so much to live for,” Lester said.
The family is calling the incident an accident, Bibb sheriff’s deputies say it’s too early to make that call, but they aren’t ruling anything out.
For now, Antrez’s family and friends are left with so many questions that need answers.
Lester says his nephew’s presence will be missed by many, and they’ll have to get through the tough time together.
“You can tell by the friends how much they loved him. His friends are crying just as hard as we are. He just had that kind of impact on them,” Lester said.
Officials at Southwest High School, where Antrez was enrolled last year, say counselors are available for students.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine what happened.
A gofundme account is set up to help pay for Antrez’s funeral arrangements. If you’d like to donate click here.
