ORIGINAL STORY (3/24/25):

JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The City of Jeffersonville issued a boil water advisory Monday night after a 6-inch water main break on Solomon Drive, according to a notice released by the city at 9 p.m.

The advisory, issued out of an abundance of caution, affects parts of the water system where water pressure may have dropped to very low levels or where service may be disrupted. According to the city, there is the “the potential a health hazard may exist due to microbial contamination in these areas without positive pressure”

The city is advising customers who have experienced water outages or low water pressure to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking or preparing food.

The city recommends the following steps to properly boil water:

  • Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container.
  • Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil.
  • Remove the water from the heat source and allow it to cool before use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing food, preparing baby formula, making ice and giving water to pets during a boil water advisory.

According to the notice, other activities such as clothes washing, dish washing and other uses can be done without boiling tap water, “if done properly.”

The advisory will remain in effect until the City of Jeffersonville completes appropriate testing and confirms there is no longer a public health concern. The city said customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted.

Once lifted, customers should flush all faucets for at least two minutes before using the water for drinking or food preparation.
