UPDATE: Armed man who barricaded himself inside restroom at Atrium Health Navicent dies

UPDATE (9 a.m.) – Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones identified the man who died after barricading himself in a restroom at Atrium Health Navicent Wednesday night as 49-year-old Christopher Valentine.


UPDATE (3:45 a.m.) – Atrium Health Navicent released an additional statement after the man who barricaded himself inside a restroom Wednesday night died:

We are thankful for the assistance of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Atrium Health Navicent Hospital Police with the overnight incident involving an armed individual, who barricaded himself in an isolated space in an adjacent medical office building. We continued to provide care for our patients during this incident. The health, safety and well-being of our patients, their families and our teammates remain our top priorities. Pastoral care has been made available for anyone needing support in relation to this incident.”



UPDATE (2:05 a.m.)
– The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says a man who barricaded himself inside a restroom Wednesday night has died.

A news release says the man took his own life after Bibb County Sheriff’s SWAT began to make entry into the restroom.

No one else was injured.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.


UPDATE (11:57 p.m.) – Atrium Health Navicent sent the following statement to 41NBC:

“We are thankful for the assistance of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office with the ongoing event of an armed individual, who is barricaded in a restroom in the 770 Pine Street medical office building. We are currently focused on communicating with our patients and their families, and our teammates, as their safety is our top priority.”



UPDATE (11:46 p.m.)
-The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office continues to assist Atrium Health Navicent Police with an armed man who is barricaded inside a restroom in a medical building.

According to the sheriff’s office, the call for assistance came in at 9:16 p.m. from Atrium Navicent Police. It was reported an armed man was locked inside a restroom in a Medical Office Building located at 770 Pine Street. Shots were reported fired inside of the room by the suspect.

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office SWAT, SRT, K-9 Interdiction, Hostage Negotiators, and Patrol Units then responded to the scene. Deputies say the suspect was not holding anyone hostage inside the restroom, and there is no one in the building he’s in.

No injures have been reported.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is working to get the man out of the barricaded area.

UPDATE (10:57 p.m.) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:

“The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting Atrium Health Navicent Police with an armed individual barricaded inside of one of their restrooms. This is not a hostage situation. The suspect is contained. There are no injuries reported at this time. Further details will be released as it becomes available.”


UPDATE (10:30 p.m.): 41NBC observed law enforcement with weapons drawn outside the hospital, and a SWAT truck has arrived on the scene. We’re still waiting for official details from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.


UPDATE (10:15 p.m.): 41NBC called the hospital’s primary contact number and an unidentified employee told us it was not safe to visit the hospital at the moment.

The person said they were unable to disclose additional information at this time.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s a heavy law enforcement presence outside Atrium Health Navicent in downtown Macon.

At least a dozen law enforcement vehicles were on the scene just before 10 p.m.
