MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The University System of Georgia has approved a tuition increase for the upcoming academic year, raising costs for students across the state.

Tuition will increase by one percent for in-state students and three percent for out-of-state and international students.

For Emma Cooper, a nursing major at Georgia College and State University, paying for school is already a challenge.

“My dad’s disabled so my parents aren’t able to help as much as they would like, so I’m kind of on my own with that,” Cooper said. “So I do worry about it going up and not being able to afford it.”

Cooper says she relies on financial aid and student loans to cover her expenses. With limited family support, she says she may have to make difficult decisions if costs continue to rise.

“I might work more or look at another option, maybe not a nursing major,” she said.

JoJo Curry, who plans to start college this summer, says rising tuition is also a major concern as she prepares for the next step in her education.

“One thing that I am concerned about with the tuition rising for the USG system is how am I gonna be able to afford college,” Curry said.

Curry says she is looking into scholarships, financial aid, and jobs that offer tuition assistance to help cover costs.

“I am very worried, but I think I will find a way to make sure to keep my life going,” she said.
