Unadilla Man Sets Off For International BBQ Competition
It’s the Rolls-Royce of the BBQ competitions, the trophy on the mantel in the living room above the fireplace, and it’s eluded Myron Mixon after a dozen attempts.
The Jack Daniel’s BBQ World Invitational is the most prestigious BBQ competition there is, according to Unadilla’s BBQ master, Myron Mixon.
Each year, the contest is held in Lynchburg, Tennessee at the Jack Daniel’s distillery. Only 60 teams are invited to the event. They are hand selected from across the globe to compete, to see who has the best smoke, rub, or sauce.
Mixon says, he’s certain it’s him.
“I’m still on top of my game,” Mixon says. “I’ve probably won more…I know I’ve won more than anybody else ever has.”
He’s probably right.
Mixon has more than 200 BBQ grand championships, and three world championships tucked under his belt.
He has sauces, rubs, and wood flavors for chicken, beef, and pork.
He has his own cookbook, and bottles his own sauce. He hosts cooking seminars to teach other people the tricks of the trade.
He’s been in the business of BBQ since he was nine years old when his dad taught him the trade.
He even has his own company-Jack’s Old South BBQ.
But the Jack Daniel’s trophy, has yet to touch his fingertips.
“Anything that revolves around BBQ, I do for a living. But the only thing that’s eluded me is that Jack Daniel’s World Championship…and I want it.”
The contest gets under way on Friday, October 21st and goes through the 22nd.
