Two Coliseum Health System facilities are ranked among the best in the nation for patient care

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two Coliseum Health Systems facilities are among the best hospitals in the country for patient care.  An independent non-profit organization gave an ‘A’ to Coliseum Medical Centers and Coliseum Northside Hospital for patient safety.

“You’re taking care of somebody whose life is out of their control right now,” explains Coliseum Northside Hospital’s CEO Stephen Daugherty.

The Leapfrog Group lists Coliseum Medical Centers and Coliseum Northside Hospital as top notch in patient care.  Daugherty explains The Leapfrog Group is a national non-profit watchdog that focuses on patient safety and quality.

“They use 28 different measures to come up with the individual grade letter that they give hospitals,” says Daugherty.

The score reflects data from hospital errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Hospitals are rated quarterly.  Coliseum Northside Hospital is proud to see its score raised from a ‘B’ to an ‘A’.

“The reason behind the score is really a long term, consistent focus on how we take care of patients,” continues Daugherty.

Down to the last detail.

“Whether that’s water on the floor that might [cause] a patient to fall [or] making sure they identify the patient with two different IDs to make sure the right patient is getting the right medications,” adds Daugherty.

Coliseum Medical Centers also attributed its score to its employees.

“A lot of diligence. A lot of effort on standardizing practices. A lot of focus on those key things that we can control,” explains CEO of Coliseum Medical Centers Lance Jones.

Double and triple checks are never too much.

“Let’s check to make sure you don’t have any allergies. Let’s make sure we’re controlling things in terms of cleanliness to prevent infections. Let’s make sure we’re doing a timeout before we take you to procedure to make sure we have the right patient and are doing the right procedure,” Jones tells 41NBC.

Both hospitals plan to stay diligent in the processes they have to make sure they keep their ‘A’.

Medical Center, Navicent Health scored a ‘C’ on The Leapfrog Group’s patient safety rating.
