Twiggs County Public Schools to launch “little libraries” this summer

JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – For students in the county, reading is not only fundamental–it’s essential and now a little more accessible thanks to the district’s ‘Little Free Library” initiative.

“No matter what you do in life, whether you’re an ordinary person or extraordinary person, you need to be able to read,” said Family Engagement Coordinator Makarios Simpson.

Tomorrow the school district will launch the initiative placing ‘Little Free Libraries’ filled with books through out the community for students to enjoy–even when school is out.

“One thing here in the county, we only have one library and it only opens maybe three to four days out of the week versus with our ‘Little Free Libraries’, they’ll be open 24/7, 7 days a week 365 days out the year,” Family Engagement Coordinator Cuveas Stephens told 41NBC.

Simpson and Stephens say with many rural families not having books around the house, the libraries will provide another option.

“We wanted to get them into the neighborhood so that during fall break, winter break, summer break, and spring break our students will have access to books to read,” Simpson explained.

It may not be their dream vacation but Stephens says the little free libraries will give kids a chance to go places without leaving home.

“We encourage children in rural areas to read because it helps to expand their minds. You know a lot of times we get stuck here in the country and we don’t know anything else but I can open up a book and go wherever I want to go,” Stephens said.

Simpson says flipping the pages of those books will also help students avoid the summer ‘backslide’.

“For our students to be able to have books to be able to read while out on a break, it’ll help them keep those skills and sometimes even improve those skills,” she added.

Reading equates to leading in schools and soon the opportunity to do both will be just a short walk down the road for kids in Twiggs.

Simpson says in addition to those first five locations, they’ll be setting up seven other locations later this year.
