Nineteen indicted in Twiggs County dogfighting investigation
Deputies say the indictments stem from a year-long investigation involving multiple state, federal and nonprofit agencies.

TWIGGS COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Nineteen people have been indicted following a year-long investigation into a dogfighting operation in Twiggs County, according to the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.
In a Monday news release, deputies said the indictments were returned February 26 by a Twiggs County grand jury after an extensive investigation led by the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Office of the District Attorney.
The indictments accuse the defendants of participating in organized dogfighting activities in violation of Georgia law.
According to the release, the case involved surveillance, the execution of search warrants, the recovery of animals and the collection of evidence tied to animal cruelty and illegal dogfighting practices.
The investigation included assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the United States Department of Agriculture, the ASPCA, the Atlanta Humane Society, LaGrange Animal Control and Laurens County Animal Control.
“This case reflects the dedication and persistence of law enforcement and our partners over the course of more than a year,” Sheriff Darren Mitchum said. “Dogfighting is not only an act of extreme cruelty to animals, but it is often associated with other forms of criminal activity that endanger our communities.”
Harold McLendon of the Office of the District Attorney said the investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when agencies work together toward a common goal.
“We are grateful for the expertise and commitment of each agency involved, particularly those responsible for the rescue, care, and evaluation of the animals affected,” McLendon said.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture and animal-welfare partners participated in the seizure, care and placement of dogs recovered during the investigation. Law enforcement has not disclosed how many animals were seized.
The cases will be prosecuted in Twiggs County Superior Court.
