Black bear struck by 2 vehicles on I-16 in Twiggs County; deputy injured
The deputy was treated and released after the early Friday crash near mile marker 21. The bear died after being struck.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- A Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office deputy suffered minor injuries after a black bear was struck by two vehicles on Interstate 16 early Friday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. October 9 near mile marker 21.
Investigators said a citizen and a deputy were traveling eastbound when a large black bear suddenly ran into the roadway.
The citizen’s vehicle struck the bear first, followed by the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
The deputy suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Macon, where the deputy was treated and released. The citizen was not injured.
The bear died from its injuries.
The Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office used the incident to remind drivers to slow down, stay alert and watch for wildlife, especially when traveling at night.
The sheriff’s office also encouraged drivers to wear seat belts, avoid distractions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
