MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Thousands of marchers turned out for the annual ‘Martin Luther King Jr. Day March and Celebration’ in Macon.

Community members from the north, south, east and west side each marched to meet at city hall to hear messages from local leaders, including Macon Mayor Robert Reichert.

Program Coordinator, Mary Butler believes each year the march symbolizes the message Dr. King left for future generations. She added it is important younger generations remember what King stood for, and his influence in today’s society.

“We must never forget a man that…could’ve gone in many different directions. He could’ve lived an elitism life, but he looked back at his brothers and his sisters that were less fortunate than him,” says Butler.
