Thousands Hit the Road for 37th Annual Macon Labor Day Road Race

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Thousands of middle Georgia runners laced up their sneakers today in Macon to run in the 37th annual Macon Labor Day Road Race.

Men and women, some young….and some….young at heart took the streets of downtown Macon hoping to finish with impressive times.

“I’m thinking an hour, I’m going to go with an hour, but I think he’s going to be less than an hour,” one racer said.

And others just wanted to finish.

The 5 and 10k routes go throughout downtown Macon into Central City Park. Runners can use their finish times to qualify for next year’s Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.

Some participants just wanted to be apart of the experience and say they were there. 69 year old Tom Sullivan has been running the race since 1980.

“I would love to be able to do it at about 5 miles an hour,” Sullivan said.

And he has the shirt to prove it.

He says he’s not looking to get any specific time. He just wants to spend the day with his buddies.

Runners filled Central City Park after the race to check their times, eat and celebrate the Labor Day holiday with their family and friends.
