Thomaston Road could soon have new Popeye’s, second restaurant

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two new restaurants could soon be coming to west Macon.
The Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commission Monday approved a conditional use application and final site plan approval, sought by Tobesofkee Crossing, LLC, for a Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen at the corner of Thomaston and Heath Roads, along with conditional use for a second, “as yet unnamed” restaurant to go next to it.
The existing site, located at 5990 Thomaston Road and owned by Tobesofkee Crossing, LLC, was previously home to a BB&T Bank branch. It closed in 2017 and the building has been vacant since. The site is currently zoned C-4, Highway Commercial.
“Our area of the county is growing and we feel that, after speaking to other banks about the property, that we will not find a bank user for this site, thus our focus on redeveloping it for a different purpose,” Tobesofkee Crossing’s Allen Shackelford wrote in a letter to Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commissioners last month.
“Our area is underserved by restaurants and we believe that our proposed development would meet a need in our community.”
Shackelford wrote in his letter to commissioners that Tobesofkee Crossing has a letter of intent from the Popeye’s franchisee and is in negotiations with another tenant for the other proposed restaurant space.
