The Bear’s Den overcomes road closure for roundabout

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Drivers can start using the new roundabout at College and Oglethorpe Streets Friday.

For the last few months, construction has affected businesses near the new site.

Business is on the rise once again at The Bear’s Den in Macon.

“I love the food here,” said customer Reed Wells.

“Great food, great food,” said

“Hopefully it will leave you with one of the best experiences you ever had eating out,” said The Bear’s Den owner Kristi Lyles.

Of course, if the road right in front of your restaurant closes, business might take a fall.

“(It) started toward the end of March,” said Lyles.

Business might take a fall.

“Immediately it was a large drastic drop,” said Lyles.

Lyles saw her customers dwindle down.

“Everything is about the customer,” said Lyles.

It created a problem getting to her restaurant.

“A lot of people that come from straight downtown could get to us pretty easily,”said Lyles. “But a lot of people that were coming from the north side of town, and the surrounding county business was the most noticeable thing.”

So like any good business owner, Lyles went to fix it.

“Through the signs, and then we did a lot more advertising than we normally do you know just through the last five months,” said Lyles. “And that helped, brought us some new customers in the process.”

Signs around town and advertisements did the trick.

“I didn’t want people to lose their job and cut hours, and certainly hurt us here,” said Lyles.

Now, it’s a weight off her shoulders.

“It’s a big sigh of relief yes,” said Lyles.

“We think it’s great for the community,” said Lyles. “I mean, I’ve walked through there many, many times since the start. It’s beautiful what they’re doing. And we’re really excited about it.”

The business should once again pick up.

“My take out shop is open until 6 o’clock at night, and so all that traffic that used to travel home this way has basically stopped for almost five months,” said Lyles.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the roundabout Friday at 11 a.m.
