Teacher accused in the drowning death of stepson to lose job

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) – An elementary school teacher accused in the murder of his disabled stepson will lose his job with the Clayton County school district.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://on-ajc.com/2cfFfkd), superintendent Luvenia Jackson confirmed Monday that the board of education voted 6-2 to terminate Michael David Smith from his job at Roberta T. Smith Elementary in Rex.

Smith, of Morrow, is facing murder and child cruelty charges after police say on June 28 he left his 11-year-old stepson Ty Lee to drown in a bathtub while he tended to his three other children. Ty was autistic and used a wheelchair.

The boy had no physical marks or signs of abuse when police arrived.

Smith has no prior criminal history. The Department of Family and Children Services has not been to the home.
