Sheriff: No credible evidence of Taylor County school shooting threat

Deputies and Butler police officers will be at district schools Friday while they work to determine where the rumors started.

BUTLER, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Deputies and Butler police officers will increase their presence at Taylor County schools Friday as they investigate rumors of a school shooting threat.

According to a Facebook post Thursday night from Taylor County Sheriff John “Bubba” Sawyer, the sheriff’s office and police department checked all information and allegations reported to them.

“At this time, there is no credible evidence to support the claim,” Sawyer wrote.

The rumors involved a threat against one of the district’s schools Friday. The post did not identify a specific school.

Law enforcement is working to determine where the rumors began and identify anyone responsible for making a threat. Sawyer said anyone found to have intentionally made a criminal threat will be arrested and prosecuted.

Sawyer is asking people to avoid sharing unverified information. Anyone who receives information about a possible threat should report it to school officials, deputies or police.
