Suspect shot, hospitalized after deputy-involved shooting in Macon
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident that happened on Triple Hill Drive in Macon.
Bibb sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 9 a.m. on Rocky Creek Road. Deputies say 21-year-old Kala Martinez told them she had been involved in a fight among 39-year-old Raymond Kitchens and his wife.
Deputies then asked Raymond to step out of the home, he refused. He then ran out of the home with a knife in is hand and authorities chased him, stunning him with a taser.
Two Bibb County law enforcement officers, Deputy Ossie Cotton & Sgt. Dina Rice, caught up with Kitchens on Triple Hill Drive. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis says the suspect lunged at Cotton forcing him to shoot Kitchens in the abdomen.
Kitchens is in stable condition at a local hospital and deputies say his injuries are non-life threatening. Davis says Kitchens also had additional injuries to his neck from the fight with his wife.
Davis says his deputies have to go through three steps before using deadly force.
“The person who’s going to use deadly force has to have the ability in this case from the information we have, the person had a knife. The person has to have an opportunity — that you’re in close proximity, he’s being threatening with the weapon, and then you yourself the deputy or another person has to feel like they are in jeopardy of serious bodily harm or injury,” Davis said.
Once the GBI finishes with their investigation, then the case gets handed over to the district attorney and from a determination on bringing the case in front of a grand jury.
Kitchens is charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and three counts of cruelty to children.
No one was killed in the shooting.
Kitchens’ wife and Martinez were offered treatment at the scene, but did not want to go to the hospital.
The GBI is investigating the shooting. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the domestic disturbance incident.
