Special student wins special title at Veterans High School
KATHLEEN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It is that time of year for high schools to pick its royalty. Getting chosen as homecoming king and queen is something most students dream of, and one Veterans High School special needs student got to live that dream.
Senior, Hannah Shepherd was crowned the 2017 Veterans High School Homecoming Queen on Friday.
“It was the best thing that’s happened in my life,” said Hannah.
While it was a surprise to Hannah, it wasn’t to her others.
“Hannah is a very outgoing child,” said her teacher, Jessica Miranda. “She’s very popular she’s involved in a lot of activities at Veterans, so she does know a lot of the students.”
It wasn’t always like that. Hannah says she remembers when she hardly knew anyone as a freshman.
“I just love this school because when I first got here as a freshman, I didn’t even know what classes I had,” said Hannah.
Hannah’s dad and Veterans teacher, David Shepherd says that quickly changed.
“Our students aren’t afraid to help with special need students and I think they reached out to Hannah as much as they reached out to them,” said David.
Hannah has never let being a student with special needs get in the way.
“She just jumps in there and completely embraces the senior thing,” said David. “She does not have ‘senioritis’. She like to use the phrase she’s ‘on fleek’ everyday.”
Whether it’s managing the school’s volleyball team, helping at the coffee shop, or cheering on her school’s team, Hannah does everything with a positive attitude and grace.
