Special needs playground being built in Monroe County
FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A playground for special needs children is popping up in Monroe County.
Leadership Monroe’s Class of 2016 has been working towards it for a year and a half, and now it’s being built.
“It’s gonna be hot and nasty but you know we’ll get it done,” Rene Jenkins, the 2016 Leadership Monroe President said.
Her group of volunteers couldn’t wait to be out working in the 95 degree heat.
“Now today is just exciting, it’s fabulous,” Jenkins.
The all abilities playground is being built at the Monroe County Parks and Rec fields. Jenkins says it’ll have sensory areas for children with autism and ramps for wheelchairs.
Leadership Monroe raised $70,000 to make the playground happen. It was the 2016 class that came up with the idea after research brought them to estimate that 850 children in Monroe County have special needs.
The playground will be finished in about a week and a grand opening will be sometime in August.
