Sparta’s oldest woman dies at 106

SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The oldest woman in Sparta has died. Family members say Jamie Louise Kennedy passed away peacefully on Sunday at 106 years old.

Kennedy served as an educator and music teacher for more than 70 years. Kennedy’s home served as a boarding house for black students who lived in rural areas of Hancock County and wanted to go to the nearby high school.

Growing up in south Georgia, Kennedy has a farm where she raised her children and taught them, and family members says she taught them the value of hard work.

Kennedy is survived by six children, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The city of Sparta honored her in 2013 by renaming one of their streets after her.

A wake for Kennedy is scheduled for this Friday at the Warren Brothers Funeral Home on 291 Spring Street in Sparta. A funeral is set for Saturday at noon at 124 Saint Mark Church Road in Sparta.
