Southwest High students participate in Law Day

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Dozens of Southwest High School and Law Academy students put down the gavels and learned more about citizen’s rights during Law Day.

The annual event featured a musical selection from the school’s brass band, seniors reflecting on the reason why they joined the law program and a speech from Chief Juvenile Court Judge, Thomas J. Matthews.

Senior Tia Jackson says the law program has given her the ability to pursue her passion.

“We all want to be something in the law, because we’ve all seen things, or we know things that we want to change,” Jackson adds, “In order to make that change, we have to take law courses and understand what it is we need to know about the future.”

Following Mathis’ speech, students took part in a mock trial.
