No threat found near Southwest High basketball game; on-court ‘altercation’ breaks out at middle school game

No evidence of a shooting was found near Southwest High School, while a separate altercation involving spectators happened at a middle school basketball game.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County School District and Bibb County Sheriff’s Office say no threat was found on campus after law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire near Southwest High School during a boys high school basketball game earlier this week.

According to an email response from the Bibb County School District, campus police and Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were already assigned to Tuesday’s Northeast vs. Southwest High School basketball game responded after reports of gunfire in the area around Southwest High School. The district says no threat was found on campus, but it remains under investigation by campus police and the sheriff’s office.

In a separate response to 41NBC, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded after 9 p.m. to the 1700 block of Williamson Road following reports of shots fired in the area. Deputies say they did not locate any physical evidence of a shooting and confirmed there was no report of a shooting at Southwest High School. No injuries were reported.

The Bibb County School District also addressed a separate incident involving a middle school basketball game the following night.

The district said during Wednesday’s middle school basketball games between Miller Middle School and Fort Valley Middle School, an on-court situation escalated and began involving spectators. According to the district, campus police and Miller staff intervened, broke up the altercation and directed both schools to exit the facility on opposite sides. The district says school administrators are continuing to contact parents and review the situation.

In its response, the Bibb County School District said it is committed to the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff and spectators at all of its events.
