Restaurant Report Card: Tropical Flava in Macon
“Beans and rice, stir fried vegetables, fried plantains, and…whatever meat you choose,” said owner James Duncombe. “We usually do upwards of about 65 pounds (of meat) a day.”
We’re eating a taste of the tropics this week, and the flavor is unmatched.
But first, a restaurant that needs to step it up: Bonefish Grill at 5080 Riverside Drive scored a 72.
They had some moldy tomatoes sitting out near the freezer, which had fruit flies hanging around, and some stored food had already expired, including some fish.

A Caribbean 100 at Tropical Flava on Ingleside Avenue translates to a 100 here in the U.S. as well–and that’s what Duncombe is aiming for.
“If you go on a cruise or you go on a flight to Jamaica, we try to make sure that when you taste the oxtails and the beans and rice here and everything here, it’s exactly the same as it would be when you go to Jamaica.”
“It’s just got a good seasoning to it, it’s just, it’s just wonderful is all I can say,” said customer Tyree Belvin.
For Duncombe, staying clean means staying healthy for both him and his customers.
“I do this for me as well because I eat here,” said Duncombe. “So, I’m here 16 hours a day, so it’s very very important to me to make sure the food is clean, the food is prepared in a clean environment, because again, I don’t want to get sick.”
“That’s great because you don’t have to worry about any germs or anything, so that’s great. and that’s what attracted me to them was when i first came, i saw the 100 on the wall,” said Belvin.
The 100 on the wall puts Tropical Flava among the best–and means they’re making the grade this week.
