Red Cross urges Middle Georgia to prepare as South Georgia wildfires burn
Red Cross urges families to make evacuation plans and prepare emergency kits as wildfires burn in South Georgia

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Wildfires are burning across south Georgia, and the American Red Cross says now is the time for Middle Georgians to prepare.
Officials say having a plan in place before an emergency can make the difference between life and death. They are encouraging families to think ahead about what they would need if forced to evacuate.
Suzanne Lawler, regional communications manager with the Red Cross, says preparation starts with having a clear plan that works for the entire household.
“Now is the time to make a plan,” she said. “Know where you’re going to go and how you are going to get there. Take into consideration different members of your family. We have three kids, two dogs and elderly parents. So think about, ‘How am I going to get there? Do I need a hotel that’s pet friendly? Am I going to need public transportation? If I have to evacuate, what are my routes out of the city?’ There may be routes cut off during a wildfire, so knowing those routes and practice them.”
The Red Cross also recommends putting together a go-kit with at least three days of supplies, including medications, important documents and chargers for essential devices.
Officials say it is also important to keep your vehicle fueled and ready to leave quickly if evacuation orders are issued.
The Red Cross encourages residents to download its free emergency app, which provides real time weather alerts, safety tips and information on nearby shelters.
