Authorities release name of GMC student who drowned at the Oconee River Greenway

UPDATE – The GMC student who died after drowning at the Oconee River Greenway has been identified as Eric Reynolds. GMC released a statement this afternoon that reads:

“Today, the GMC family is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of one of our own, Milledgeville student Eric Reynolds. We would like to express our condolences to his family and friends. We also ask your help in respecting the families privacy in their time of grief. GMC Milledgeville will provide grief counseling for our students as needed.”

UPDATE – Corporal Lynn Stanford with the DNR says the body of the 20-year-old GMC student has been located. It was found around 11:16 this morning by the DNR’s Aviation Unit. The body was found about 200 yards away from where the student was last seen. The scene is now being cleared. The park is still closed.

UPDATE (5/4/2018): A sergeant with the Dept. of Natural Resources says the man who drowned at the Oconee River Greenway in Milledgeville Thursday is a 20-year-old student at Georgia Military College.

The man was swimming with a friend Thursday afternoon when he drowned.

Recovery efforts are underway Friday morning involving several different agencies. The Greenway is closed.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Recovery efforts are underway to find a man who drowned at the Oconee River Greenway in Milledgeville Thursday.

Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee confirmed the unidentified man drowned around 5:30 p.m. Crews from the Milledgeville Fire Department attempted to find the man’s body but were unable.

Massee says recovery efforts are on hold until Friday morning, when the Georgia State Patrol Dive Team will likely conduct a search.
