MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A stretch of Poplar Street in downtown Macon will soon be known as “Bryan Nichols Way,” honoring the founder of the Macon Christmas Light Extravaganza for his service and leadership in the community.

The Macon-Bibb County Commission approved the ordinance Tuesday, dedicating the portion of Poplar Street between First Street and Third Street in Nichols’ name. Commissioner Valerie Wynn sponsored the legislation.

Nichols started the Macon Christmas Light Extravaganza in 2017 after noticing a lack of holiday displays in the area. The event has since grown into a major holiday attraction, drawing more than 900,000 visitors during the 2024-2025 season and earning state, regional and national attention.

Nichols also operates local businesses, including Taste and See Coffee Shop & Gallery and Macon Rocks rock climbing gym.

The ordinance includes a $500 appropriation from the county’s general fund to pay for materials and signage. It remains unclear when the new signs will be installed.

A map included in the legislation shows that both directional lanes of Poplar Street between First Street and Third Street are part of the dedication.
