Perry preparing for New Year’s Eve Buzzard Drop

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – New York City has the “Big Apple Drop,” Atlanta has the “Peach Drop” and Perry has it’s own way of ringing in the New Year.

Thousands are expected to bring in 2015 at The 2nd Annual Buzzard Drop in Perry. The city is preparing for an anticipated crowd of more than 6,000 people.

“I haven’t talked to anyone who came last year or heard about it last year, that hasn’t promised to come this year,” says the Perry’s Mayor, James Faircloth. “Therefore, this year we should at least have double the crowd.”

According to Faircloth nearly 3,000 people showed up to the 2014 Buzzard Drop. The mayor admits one of the largest restaurants of downtown Perry ran out of food during the New Year’s Eve event.

“We had quite a few people to descend upon the City of Perry for the first annual Buzzard Drop,” explains Faircloth. “The local restaurants downtown were not really prepared for that.”

But, this year the city has asked merchants and restaurants to stay open later and to be prepared to feed the massive crowd.

They are also adding food vendors and an additional band to kick off the festivities at 8 p.m.

This year they are having a Buzzard Boogie dance contest with a $100 prize for the winner.

At midnight Bob the Buzzard will swoop down to ring in 2015 in the downtown Perry Square.

“We want to bring people into our downtown, says Perry Main Street President Susan Scrugg. “So they can see just how beautiful downtown Perry is and all the wonderful things that Perry has to offer in a fun atmosphere.”

The city plans to block off downtown Perry streets Wednesday around 2 p.m.

“We did not have any problems whatsoever,” Faircloth added. “We don’t anticipate any this year.”

Mayor Faircloth says the city wants to prevent Buzzard Drop attendees from driving drunk. Perry police are providing free rides to people who may have too much alcohol.
