PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Perry Police Department is investigating a string of burglaries at convenience stores in the city.

Thieves aren’t going after cash, but other items behind the counter, leaving some store owners confused.

Thieves covered in masks, arm sleeves, and t-shirts have broken into two convenience stores twice in the month of August.

After police made arrests for a string of burglaries in June, Perry Police Captain Heath Dykes says he thought the problem was taken care of.

“We were able to locate the subjects on Hwy 96 and we took three into custody at that time and they were charged for the burglaries of the three convenient stores they had broken into in our jurisdiction,” Dykes said.

The masked men have targeted stores like Speedy’s on Houston Lake Rd.

But they aren’t taking money.

“They stole cigarettes and cigars,” Dykes said.

Cases of them.

Dykes thinks the rash of August break-ins could be related to those back in June, and says it could be gang activity.

Officers will be stepping up patrols at convenient stores throughout the city, trying to catch the masked men before they strike again.

Captain Dykes says stealing cases of tobacco could be a form of gang initiation.

There are leads in this investigation, but anyone with information is urged to call the Perry Police Department at 478-988-2800.
