Perry officials celebrate Houston Co. Schools improvements at community luncheon

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Progress in Perry is what city leaders came together to discuss with community members at the annual state of the community.

“We have a lot to be proud of here,” said Perry Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Chair Scott Cox.

Cox and other officials say the city is continuing to grow.

“We really learned about what’s going on at the base, what’s going on here at Perry itself with all the different life improvements going on here,” Cox said.

With new road improvements, upcoming building projects in downtown and new initiatives in schools through the ESPLOST.

“We have a great school system,” he added.

Local business owners and residents got to hear from school and city officials who say providing mental health resources to students is a major priority.

“Our resource officers that we recently added to the Houston County schools made our schools a whole lot more safe for our kids. There’s always those things that happen but we’re trying to fortify those schools,” Cox continued.

In addition to construction on new facilities and spending millions on new books and supplies for students, Houston County Schools also just purchased more than $3 million in brand new textbooks for students.

“We’re very proud of the areas of work in the science and stem initiatives that are going on in our schools and we’re starting to reap the benefit of those focus programs,” Superintendent Dr. Mark Scott said during the luncheon.

They say building a better future begins with giving students the best access to education. That’s exactly what officials in Perry and Houston County are hoping to continue.

Other big topics discussed during Thursday’s State of the Community Luncheon in Perry were the new road projects on Big Indian Creek, Lake Joy Road, State Road 127 and King’s Chapel Road.
