Perry Library staff urging visitors to rent more books as they prepare for renovations

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Perry’s library is closing temporarily. Staff is preparing for a complete overhaul of upgrades and they need the community’s help.

Sara Paulk says she’s on a mission.

“Libraries are essential. They’re not mandated, but essential,” Paulk said.

The director for the Houston County Library System is slowly transitioning thousands of books to a temporary location for the next several months.

“We’ll be setting up service there for the next eight months while this building is being renovated added on, and improved,” Paulk said.

She thinks improvements are a long time coming for the 40-year-old library.

“We’ll be bumping out the back and adding more parking. We hope to have a canopy so that when you come in from the rain , you won’t get soaked,” Paulk said.

She says there will be more meeting rooms and new computers, as well as children’s literacy corner.

All of the upgrades are from penny sales tax dollars.

“That was $800,000 in the SPLOST and then $1.6 million through state bonds,” Paulk said.

Several different groups are helping the library during the moving process, from elected officials from the city and county to Robins Air Force Base.

“The rest of them are going to be stored long [books], long term storage, for a year. So we have to have a place for that, and Colonel Hill has been gracious enough to allow us to use the base.”

When renovations upgrades complete, Paulk wants the space to be as functional as possible.

“If you’re going to have a building, you need to have a functional, practical, and aesthetically beautiful building, that’s what we’ve got in Centerville, and at Nola, and that’s what the people in Perry want,” Paulk said.

She’s encouraging patrons to check out up to 50 books for an extended check out period to lighten the load as the staff prepares for the move.

The library is closing temporarily on July 19th.
