PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new Liberty Tree marker in Perry is honoring America’s founding history ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary.

On Tuesday, the city of Perry held a Liberty Tree marker dedication ceremony at the Houston County Courthouse.

A Liberty Tree refers to a historical symbol of American independence. The original was a famous elm tree in Boston, Massachusetts, where American colonists gathered to protest British policies.

Dan Perdue, Chair of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, says the original Liberty Tree was in Boston. That was where the Sons of Liberty began to meet and figure out a way to defy the British.

“They first defied the British with the stamp act of 1765,” he said. “And in 1775, the British cut down that elm tree, known as the Liberty Tree, and that’s where Liberty Hall is today. What the British didn’t realize is, you can cut down a tree, but you cannot cut down an idea. So, we’re dedicating this tree today. It already stands, but its roots are enduring and it’s a living marker, rather than just a plaque or a statue.”

Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda Patrick says this country is better when we all work together.

“As we celebrate America 250, let’s remember those words,” she said. “Our differences make us strong, but overall, it makes us united in one country, which we all call home. So, may we continue to be united, work in unity, and uplift all the differences that make us the greatest county in the world.”

Perry Mayor Randall Walker is reminding everyone that freedom doesn’t come free.

“It’s come at a cost to all of us,” he said. “We have to really think about the number of people who have given their lives to continue to protect the freedom that was represented 250 years ago. But this morning, I would ask you to think about and pray for the people who are in harm’s way today.”

The Liberty Tree is located at 201 Perry Parkway in Perry.
