Payne City could soon join Macon-Bibb County consolidated government

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A local state lawmaker introduced a bill that he says will help Payne City residents pay lower taxes.

Georgia State Sen. David Lucas (D) says he introduced a bill that would abolish Payne City as a city. The bill would also make Payne City a part of Macon-Bibb County’s consolidated government.

Lucas says the Macon Water Authority recently took over water and sewer service in the city. He adds if the bill becomes a law it would eliminate a pending lawsuit against the city regarding a medical waste incinerator.

“Payne City has the highest taxes in Bibb County right now, because they have to pay for all of their services,” said Lucas. “Folks who are trying to put a waste incinerator in Payne City would have to go through Planning and Zoning.”

Lucas says the bill would have to be signed by Governor Nathan Deal to become a law.
