Operation Safe Streets leads to seizure of firearms and illegal drugs in Macon

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says a 90-day crime reduction initiative resulted in the seizure of dozens of firearms and illegal drugs as part of a coordinated effort targeting violent crime and criminal activity.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says a 90-day crime reduction initiative resulted in the seizure of dozens of firearms and illegal drugs as part of a coordinated effort targeting violent crime and criminal activity.

Operation Safe Streets brought together the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit, Drug Unit, Strategic Intelligence Center, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Gang Task Force, the United States Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Crash Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Unit, and the Georgia State Patrol.

According to the sheriff’s office, the operation focused on areas identified through crime analysis as having increased reports of shots fired, ongoing loitering at convenience stores and commercial properties, and other criminal activity.

Investigators executed search warrants, arrest warrants and conducted targeted traffic enforcement throughout the operation.

Officials say law enforcement agencies seized approximately 26 firearms, seven pounds of marijuana, 4.6 ounces of cocaine, 13 grams of methamphetamine and 12 grams of fentanyl.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says Operation Safe Streets was conducted with state and federal law enforcement partners as part of an ongoing effort to reduce violent crime and improve public safety in the community.
