Old National Guard Building house first responders in Dodge County

DODGE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Travel times to hospitals for residents in Dodge County, just got a little faster.

There’s a new place in Dodge County where first responders can call home. The Carter Martin Public Safety building is being used to house emergency personnel in case of emergency situations.

The old National Guard facility will serve as a 911 call center, and in some cases it will be used to airlift people to hospitals in Macon, Columbus or Atlanta.

The helicopter would land in the fence area in the back which is safer than what residents have had in the past.

Charles Williams, Executive Director of Development Authority and Chamber of Commerce explains,”Think about what it was before this. If a helicopter came here to pick up a patient and he was in an emergency room and they needed to ship him somewhere for triage or a better facility to handle his need. They land in a street next to the hospital which means they had to stop traffic and you got a whirly bird sitting there with rotors spinning. You have to transport him to the helicopter by the ambulance anyway and its half a mile from there to here so it’s a much safer much more organized and it doesn’t disrupt hospital traffic any given day.”

Retired Brigadier General William Steel started his journey with the military in this same building. Steel reflects on all of the memories he shared in what he call his home. He says the building means so much to him and he’s glad the county will be using it once again.

“I’m so happy for the county to get this building. This is built with federal government standards. You couldn’t get a building built with this quality today and this size. It would be extremely expensive. This is really a diamond in the roof for Dodge County,” Steel says.

County leaders say this is just the beginning. There is so much more planned for the future.

Williams adds, “In the years to come, Dodge County will have more facilities and capabilities to keep our people safe in this part of the world.”

The Carter Martin Public Safety building officially opened up on Wednesday.
